We recently added a GEARS golf system to our studio which has created a lot of discussion about the difference between TRACKMAN and GEARS. Rather than detail the minutiae of each offerings technology, we thought it would be best to compare these two systems from a practical stand point…. How each system can help YOU become a better golfer.
WHAT TRACKMAN DOES-
Trackman uses radar technology to track your golf ball in-flight from the moment it leaves your clubface until the moment it stops rolling. It takes this data and then ESTIMATES what your club and club face did during the swing using a very complex algorithm. Although these estimates are fairly accurate, the only thing Trackman actually measures is your ball flight, everything else is a “guess.” We would like to add that the measurements are only valid if you are using the Trackman outside. In an indoor environment, Trackman would also be estimating the ball flight since it cannot measure something that did not finish.

WHAT GEARS GOLF DOES-
GEARS is an optical (camera-based) tracking system, powered by 8 ultra-HD (1.7 megapixel) cameras running at 360 frames per second. These cameras capture over 600 images per swing using 32 optical sensors placed at key spots around the body and golf club. The GEARS software then takes this data and creates a true 3D model of your golf swing INCLUDING YOUR BODY MOTIONS. The output information is hard data providing true measurements (NOT estimates). Built on the same technology used by biomechanists, video game designers and filmmakers, GEARS is the most advanced motion capture solution available developed specifically for golf.

HOW WILL THIS MAKE ME A BETTER GOLFER?
The quick answer is it won’t. Only lessons at Golf Science and practice will make you better! However, having the proper tools available will greatly assist your instructor in showing you what you are currently doing and how to improve upon that.
Trackman is an amazing device and has revolutionized golf. If you want to know exactly how far, how high and with how much spin you hit your 7-iron, nothing will give you more accurate data. But all of the other data it provides is estimated and basically an educated guess.
GEARS golf takes true measurements on everything your body and club are doing in the golf swing and then creates a 3D model for you and your instructors review. Having this information is invaluable in evaluating your swing because it shows what the golf ball did, why it did that AND, most importantly, what your body did to cause the shot. How can you cure your slice without knowing what your body and arms did to cause that slice?
You and your Golf Science instructor can review your swing to see what you are doing wrong and correct it quickly. Additionally, we have the ability to compare your full swing to other 3D models including your swings from the past or even a tour professional such as Rickie Fowler or Ian Poulter.
